A Friend for Hiyah
Well, it's Friday. That means crack and crabs night. I'm sure the 'hood will be hopping tonight.

Hiyah has a friend that stopped by to hang. How nice!

Tomorrow is Troy Davis funeral. Not sure what to expect out here. It is being held a mile or so down the road on Montgomery Street.
It is also Oktoberbest on the river. I hope to be able to go down there for a little while tomorrow. My first fall class starts tomorrow afternoon. Then, I'll home to return to decorate more on the inside for Halloween. Still holding off with the graveyard until next week. After Bill cuts the grass, then the headstones and the little fence will go out. It should look good by next Friday.

Thursday September 29 2011

Another shooting last night. This one is 5 blocks away from us on Montgomery Street. The co-owner of Mr. Wonderful's (a club) was shot around 8:30 PM. What the hell is  going on in Savannah? This is 3 homicides within walking distance to our house in a WEEK!

This morning, I put a sign on the fence of the trash can thief on 34th street. I put the picture of the trash can with the big number 310 on it behind their fence on the note. I told them not to steal neighbors' trash cans. Pick up the damn phone and dial 3-1-1. The city will deliver you FREE trash cans as long as you pay for water/sewer/trash removal. As soon as the trash men picked up the trash this morning, I ran outside and picked up my 2 trash cans and locked them behind my fence!

I started my Halloween decorations. I'm still not thrilled with the tornado. When Bill comes home, maybe he will have some more ideas.

Pile of crap behind my fence
Some a-hole decided to burn their trash and dump all the ashes and debris behind my fence in the alley. Nice. It was probably the thieves on Montgomery Street that steal trash cans from the alley.  I'd love to catch one of these people.
Because I'm on the neighborhood watch, I got a call this afternoon about a missing child in our area. Turned out a driver from a daycare picked up this child by mistake instead of another child. How bizarre! At least the little boy was found and is alright. Although, his mom had quite a scare that she won't soon forget.

The trunk, not exactly secure
Well, another "bump" in the road to owning your own car. Here is the latest. The trunk will not close. Too bad this didn't happen a week ago when she locked her keys in the trunk! This thing was in a non-reported accident and the deck lid has shifted. I told her that when she was looking at it buying it, but of course, that didn't matter to Rachel. To close the lid before, took a lot of brute force. Now, it just won't close. She drove it home from Statesboro in the rain on Sunday afternoon with a telephone cord holding it somewhat closed. I put graphite in the locking mechanism and oil on the hinges, but I can't get it to close. So, Bungee cord to the rescue!

Sunday September 25 2011- Two wrongs do not make a right

The crowd is preparing for the parade

Trash can hidden in back yard of 307 W 34th

BBQ place is the wood shack on the right.
It was a strange Sunday. At first it was quiet like a usual Sunday. Then, a crowd started to gather. Next thing, there was a parade coming down Montgomery Street. I don't know who or why, but there was a parade.
The BBQ place on Montgomery beside Montgomery Liquors, has taken the trash cans from the alley that don't belong to them. They took the green trash cans that belong to 311 W. 34th street and 307 W. 34th Street. Now some new tenants have moved into 307 W. 34th Street, and they have no trash cans. So, what did they do? They took one of our trash cans. Bill put a note on the fence and they returned it (full of crap). However, they then took one of our tenant's trash cans. You can see that the Big Number 310 is painted on the side in the backyard of 307 W. 34th Street. 2 wrongs do not make a right. Now the tenants don't have a trash can. The tenants at 307 W. 34th should have called 3-1-1 to get a new trash can instead of STEALING.

Friday September 23, 2011 First day of Autumn

dealing

Preparing for a busy night
It's the first day of Autumn. The temp is a balmy 91 degrees. How fall-like!
Friday means, Crack 'n Crabs night! I watched a guy sell "something" to a person in the back of this car. Brazen. Right out in the open. No Fear. As you can see, plenty of "friends" hanging out on the corner. 3 dealers, no waiting!
Oh boy, somebody is going to JAIL!
Somebody's night is ruined.

Car on sidewalk at 37th and MLK

Hiyah and a LOUD friend
Around 10 this morning, as I drove by MLK and 37th, there was a car sitting on the sidewalk facing the wrong way. If you look at the pic closely, you will see it just missed hitting the house.
I think Hiyah has given up working. I haven't seen him working for a bit now. It must have been terrible to work for a few days. Here is Hiyah walking up to the porch. His friend is a Hiyah wanna be. He is sitting on the porch in a Hiyah-like hat, drinking beer in a bag. Again, if he was quiet, that would be one thing, but the guy is so frigging loud, he brings attention to himself.

Well, Troy Davis is supposed to be put to death at 6 PM. All the media and bleeding heart organizations around the world are trying to get his sentence commuted.  Funny, I don't hear about anyone trying to get the sentence commuted of the white man in Texas that dragged a black man behind his truck for 3 miles, killing him. Hmmmm....He only killed one man. Troy Davis killed at least 2 including a cop. Justice should be served equally.

Something that has been aggravating me a lot has been the damn jaywalkers around here. What is it with these people? I came home this morning and 3 young men are walking in the street on 35th Street. Why? We have a great invention around here, called the S-I-D-E-W-A-L-K! The guys seemed a bit put out when I drove very close to them, pulled in front of my house and parked. I told them we have wonderful sidewalks here, they should USE them. And another thing, why are these able-bodied young men out here walking the street anyway? Shouldn't they be working or trying to find a job? Not hanging out at 9 in the morning. I'm sure I'll have more on this later.

Tuesday September 20 2011

Forgot to mention on Friday night when Bill and I were going out to dinner, the scumbags across the street were smoking pot on the front porch. Passing a joint around like it was just a normal thing. Also, Hiyah was over there, but he was drinking his Old Milwaukee. What a place!
Rachel started working at Outback last night. She came home at 10:30PM. Kind of late for a school night. She said she had a shock when her boss from Basil's came walking through the door with wife and family in tow for a dinner at Outback. She didn't give him a notice because she is planning on job sharing that job with Jill. He was good about it. She told him she needed more hours and more money. Don't we all!

if you don't like the way I drive, stay off the sidewalk!  Yup, the big truck is parked on the sidewalk.

What the hell is that walking down the street?
It was a little quiet out there until someone on the porch started yelling. Don't know what he was saying but he doesn't live there and walked away. Then I see this walking down the street. Thinks he's Joe Cool. It isn't even that hot out there. No shirt, "shorts" hanging around the bottom of his butt. But he thinks he looks good.

Rachel's car has been working fine since all that work was done. Yippee!

Sunday September 18 2011

All's quiet on Sunday
After all the excitement of the other morning, it is pretty quiet in the 'hood this morning. It's tough with no liquor stores open. No real reason to hang out here. It is also a bit nippy for down here. It is only mid-September and the temperature this morning is a brisk 61 degrees. We will enjoy it while we got it.
A guy that knows Bill stopped by the house at 11:30 this morning. He already reeked of alcohol. He asked for a dollar. I told him I didn't have any cash. He asked if I would take my "card" and go get him a dollar! Then I told him I needed to go because I had a pizza in the oven for lunch.  He asked if he could have a piece.  Un-frigging believable! I don't thinks so buddy.

Friday September 16 2011

Wow, big excitement down the street around 4:30 AM. 6 blocks from our house, was a shooting. 2 of our previous tenants that lived next door to us, moved to the 300 block of West 41st street. They were awakened by shots and police cars. The girls were pretty shook up but are OK.
Metro police found two men dead within three blocks of each other in west Savannah this morning. They're treating both deaths as homicides.
Neighbors heard gunshots and called police to an apartment house in the 300 block of West 41st Street, near the intersection of 41st and Jefferson streets, at 4:15 a.m. Officers found a man believed to be in his late teens dead in the common area of the house, with drugs near his body. Police say drug activity has been going on in the house where he was found.
Not long after they got to 41st Street, police were called to a second body in the lane behind 38th Street, near Jefferson Street. A man in his early 20s was found dead. Police haven't released how he died but say it was homicide.

So, the second dead guy was only 3 blocks from our house. Yikes!  Well, better get some more shotgun shells.

Hiyah in the red shirt

Well, Hiyah was hanging out across the street yesterday. Seems he is still trying to stay out of camera range. Maybe he's trying to keep a low profile.
As I was taking Chip for a walk at 7:30 this AM, a police car went flying by us on 36th Street and rushed on up to Jefferson and 33rd. About 6 police cars were there with lights on. An hour later, they were all gone, so it likely was not a shooting. But who knows? It never seems to make the news.
7:30 AM Who Knows?

Tuesday September 13 2011

Hiyah going home
Here he is, walking home, I mean Montgomery Beverages for his libations. Yup, that's Hiyah in the orange shirt walking in the door.

Late last night around 11 PM, about 6 people were on Hiyah's stoop.  They must have been keeping poor Hiyah awake. I didn't see him working this morning. Maybe he got up late. Poor guy.

Monday September 12 2011

Very quiet here in the hood. Hiyah was hanging out on Montgomery Street in front of David's Crabs. Trying to stay out of the limelight.
Rachel's car on the other hand.... She called me after 4 PM. The beast wouldn't start. I picked her up and took Jill home to Wilmington Island.  Then, we came back and the beast started. Rachel didn't make it home. The beast died on Victory Drive. Right in front of a gas station. I drove over to her car, put a gallon of gas in it. It started up. Then she tried to make a u-turn to get back to the gas station, and ... you guessed it. It died again. After 15 minutes or so, it started again. She got into the station and put $11 in gas in the tank. Then... Oh hell NO. It wouldn't start AGAIN. A nice man said he was a mechanic in the military. He looked at a couple of things. Then he leaned under the car, asking Rachel to bump the ignition a couple of times. He got up and said, the fuel pump is not pumping. So..now it will have to be towed.

Saturday September 10 2011

Yesterday old Hiyah was out there at 7 AM with his Old Milwaukee. At 7:30 he was....working. Emptying trash and sweeping sidewalks. Damn. By 8, he was back on the porch with his Old Milwaukee, exhausted. As Bill and I went out to dinner at 5:00, Hiyah was passed out on the front porch. The poor man. All that work is killing him. But, when we returned at 6:30, Hiyah was up and had just returned from Montgomery Street with a fresh can of OM. The man is a machine!

Well, Rachel's car started after school on Friday so she was able to go to a job interview at Outback uptown. Too bad, they seem to have misplaced her application and a new hiring process was instituted. She wasn't exactly prepared when the manager told her she would need to spend about an hour doing the new application. Plus Jill was chilling in Rachel's car. So, she told the manager she would come back today. Good luck with parking uptown. If you have ever seen Rachel parallel park, you would understand. She actually failed that part of the driving test!

That said, take a gander at this parking job on 35th Street last night. Hello! We do not have angle parking on 35th. Someone was in a BIG hurry for Crack and Crabs night!
Parking?

Thursday September 8, 2011

Well, this sucks. I got a whopping $31 for my unemployment check for the whole week. I had to apply for extended benefits today and that means I can go 3-4 WEEKS before I get another check. Damn. Nice of the unemployment office to explain this.
Yesterday, when Bill dropped off John in front of our house (the guy that is helping him paint some townhouses in Georgetown), Hiyah walked up to John. He told John he that is working now. Imagine that! Hiyah is a working man! 'Course, he still has his Old Milwaukee. Can't work without a little something to hydrate.

Wednesday September 7 2011

New dude
We got a new dude in town. I don't recall seeing this guy before. He's been hanging out here for a little bit. Looks antsy. He keeps looking up and down the street. Can't seem to sit still.
Hmmm. Not sure what he's up to.

Tuesday September 6 2011

The boys in blue.

OMG Hiyah is working!
I stepped out for a bit and when I returned, I said to myself, Dang, it is awfully quiet out here. Then I looked across the street. Hmmm. Boys in blue in the hood. Yup, that'll make the cockroaches slither away.

OMG, I looked outside and there is Hiyah and his old lady sweeping!!! The landlord, Ben had cut the grass and now Hiyah, yes HIYAH, is out there sweeping. I'm glad I got a picture, 'cause otherwise I wouldn't believe it.

On the Rachel front, the beast wouldn't start when she got out of school. She wasn't sure if it was out of gas, so I brought the gas can and put a gallon in it. Of course it still wouldn't start. I brought her home for an hour then we went back. After a few minutes, it finally started. Yeah!

Sunday September 4 2011

Been a little quiet out there. Saw some female get a can of Old Milwaukee from somewhere (BP on Montgomery?) and walk over to Hiyah's place. She didn't even have it in a paper bag. There are no Sunday sales, so I don't know where she got it from.

Saturday AM, Rachel called me at 8 AM (can you believe it, she was awake at that hour on a Saturday?).  I was at Starbucks trying to enjoy some quiet time. She had been stopped by the police on Friday night. The MONEY PIT had no license plate light. WTF? Can you believe it? I checked it when I got home and sure enough, there was no light. I reached in behind the bumper and found the light but there is nothing to hold it in place above the license plate. I duct taped the hell out of it and now it shines down on the plate.

Thursday September 1 2011

I think Hiyah is getting to be a little camera shy these days. I saw him get his Old Milwaukee and run inside the house this morning bright and early.
This morning, Rachel left bright and early at 7 AM. She was on the phone with her buddy Steven and was meeting him somewhere. Then, at 9 AM, I get a call from school. Rachel was LATE. WTF? She now has detention. I asked her this afternoon and she said she met Steven at the park and then her car wouldn't start. The car needs to get in the shop but she can't seem to get her ass out of it.

Still haven't heard anything back from the reporter. Guess he's not interested.
It was pretty quiet outside. I went to look out the window and saw the boys in blue. Funny how that seems to make the cockroaches disappear.
All's quiet on the Western Front
